1984\u201398: Early life and career beginnings<\/span><\/h3>\n

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born near\u00a0Santa Barbara, California, to\u00a0Pentecostal\u00a0pastors Maurice Keith Hudson and Mary Christine Perry of Keith Hudson Ministries.\u00a0Her parents are both\u00a0reformed Christians, each having turned to\u00a0God\u00a0after a “wild youth”.\u00a0Through her mother, Perry is a half-niece of film director and producer\u00a0Frank Joseph Perry, Jr.\u00a0She has a younger brother named\u00a0David, who is also a singer,[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and an older sister Angela.<\/p>\n

1999\u20132006:\u00a0Katy Hudson<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0The Matrix<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n

In December 1999, Perry completed her\u00a0General Educational Development\u00a0after her first semester of her freshman year at\u00a0Dos Pueblos High School\u00a0and left school in the pursuit of a career in music. Perry briefly studied\u00a0Italian opera\u00a0at the\u00a0Music Academy of the Westin Santa Barbara.\u00a0At 15, her singing caught the attention of rock veterans from\u00a0Nashville, Tennessee, who brought her there to improve her writing skills.\u00a0In Nashville, she started recording\u00a0demos\u00a0and learned how to write songs and play guitar.\u00a0After signing with\u00a0Red Hill Records, Perry recorded her debut album, a gospel record titled\u00a0Katy Hudson<\/i>. The album was released on March 6, 2001,[14]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and she joined The Strangely Normal Tour in support of it.\u00a0The album was commercially unsuccessful, selling an estimated 200 copies before the label ceased operations in December.<\/p>\n

2010\u201312:\u00a0Teenage Dream<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n

It remained at the top of the chart for six consecutive weeks.\u00a0She released the album’s second U.S. chart-topping single, “Teenage Dream”, before releasing the album on August 24, 2010.\u00a0Teenage Dream<\/i>\u00a0debuted at number one on the\u00a0Billboard<\/i>\u00a0200.\u00a0It was met with mixed reviews from music critics, and has since sold 5.7 million copies globally.\u00a0On October 18, 2010, “Firework” was released as the album’s third single. It became the album’s third consecutive number-one on the Hot 100 on December 8, 2010.\u00a0The song has since been certified 9\u00d7 Platinum in the United States, and remains Perry’s highest seller.<\/p>\n

2013\u2013present:\u00a0Prism<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n

In November 2012, Perry began work on her fourth album,\u00a0Prism<\/i>. She told\u00a0Billboard<\/i>, “I know exactly the record I want to make next. I know the artwork, the coloring and the tone….. I even know what type of tour I’m doing next. I’ll be very pleased if the vision I have in my head becomes a reality.”\u00a0Although she told\u00a0L’Uomo Vogue<\/i>\u00a0in June 2012 that she planned to have “darker elements” in\u00a0Prism<\/i>,\u00a0she revealed to\u00a0MTV\u00a0during the\u00a02013 MTV Video Music Awards\u00a0that she changed the album’s direction after periods of self-reflection.
